About

American violin virtuoso Joshua Bell returns to the Shanghai Oriental Art Center for a night of musical brilliance, performing Mozart, Schubert, and Fauré alongside longtime collaborator Sam Haywood. Expect masterful technique, emotional depth, and a few surprise pieces unveiled on the spot.

For nearly 40 years, the American violin virtuoso Joshua Bell has captivated audiences worldwide with his unparalleled technical mastery and charismatic performances. One of the most celebrated artists of our time, Bell has collaborated with nearly every major orchestra and has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award, Gramophone Award, OPUS Klassik, and Avery Fisher Prize. His contributions extend beyond the concert hall—his recording for The Red Violin soundtrack won an Academy Award for Best Original Score.

After a long-awaited return, this versatile violinist—renowned for effortlessly bridging classical, contemporary, popular, and film music—will once again grace the stage at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. Armed with his precious 1713 Stradivarius, he will bring to life a spellbinding evening of musical romance.

A Night of Emotion & Virtuosity

In this recital, Bell reunites with his long-time collaborator, pianist Sam Haywood, for a performance of masterful works by Mozart, Schubert, and Fauré—each piece a showcase of both emotional depth and dazzling virtuosity.

Mozart’s Sonata No. 21 in E minor (1778) was composed in the wake of his mother’s passing, with sorrow and philosophical introspection woven into every note. It remains the only minor-key violin sonata in his repertoire, making it uniquely expressive.

Schubert’s Fantasy in C Major was written for violinist Joseph Slavík, designed to highlight his formidable technical skills. This piece demands exceptional proficiency from both violinist and pianist, pushing their artistry to the limits.

Fauré’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Major, one of his early masterpieces, is an elegant yet impassioned work filled with French sophistication. It played a crucial role in shaping the development of French national music.
