Step into a 300-year-old courtyard mansion in the misty mountains of Wuyuan, where history, nature, and comfort come together. This staycation at Skywells includes village explorations, local flavors, and a cozy retreat in one of China’s most picturesque regions.

Wuyuan Skywells is a boutique family inn owned by an English-Chinese couple, Ed and Selina, alongside a team of local villagers who manage the day-to-day operations. Nestled in a Song Dynasty village, this 300-year-old courtyard mansion has been carefully restored, offering guests a rare glimpse into China’s past.

This historic home has stood through the Qing Empire, Nationalist and Communist rule, and modernity. Shielded from the turmoil of the 20th century by the misty Wuyuan mountains, it offers an authentic, untouched experience of traditional China. The inn features a tea-drinking area overlooking one of the skywells—an open-air architectural feature designed to bring in sunlight, fresh air, and rainwater. Built with thick walls, small windows, and high roofs to deter bandits, the mansion reflects a time when merchants frequently traveled, leaving their homes vulnerable.
