Description

Berlin’s legendary Schaubühne Theatre brings Michael Kohlhaas to Shanghai, a gripping modern adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist’s classic tale of justice and revenge. Directed by Simon McBurney (Complicité co-founder) and Annabel Arden, the production blends live projections and smartphone streaming to question morality in an unjust world. Starring Renato Schuch, it’s a tense, visually striking drama that’s earned global acclaim.

About the Production

Michael Kohlhaas is a modern reinterpretation of Heinrich von Kleist’s novella, a cornerstone of German Romantic literature. The Schaubühne’s adaptation, premiered in 2021, transposes the 16th-century story into the present day, employing live projections and smartphone streaming to explore themes of justice, revenge, and systemic oppression. Directed by Simon McBurney and Annabel Arden, the production has been praised for its emotional intensity and innovative staging.

Synopsis

Michael Kohlhaas, an honest horse trader, is wronged by a nobleman’s fabricated laws. After his horses are mistreated and his servant abused, he seeks legal redress but faces bureaucratic corruption. His wife’s death during a protest pushes him into violent retribution. The play interrogates whether breaking the law can ever justify achieving justice.
