The legendary Vienna Boys Choir—Austria’s 500-year-old national treasure—is returning to Shanghai this October for a special concert celebrating the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II’s birth. Expect angelic voices gliding through waltzes, opera classics, folk tunes, and even a few modern surprises in a night of pure vocal magic.

Program is subject to change

The Vienna Boys Choir traces its origins to the Austrian Imperial Chapel, founded in 1498, with a glorious history spanning 527 years. It nurtured countless musical masters such as Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Bruckner. Composers like Gallus and conductors like Richter, Mortier, and Gross were all members of the choir during their childhood. In modern times, many renowned musicians have collaborated with the choir, including Karajan, Bernstein, Solti, Abbado, Zubin Mehta, Muti, Seiji Ozawa, and Carreras, creating supremely beautiful musical works widely acclaimed. World-famous orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Berlin State Opera, and Pittsburgh Symphony frequently invite the choir for collaborative performances, presenting exquisitely refined music to the world. On March 16, 2017, UNESCO officially declared the Vienna Boys Choir an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (in the category of Education and Choral Tradition).

The Vienna Boys Choir has around 100 official members, primarily aged 9 to 14, divided into four choirs of 25 children each, named after the composers Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Bruckner. These four choirs perform over 300 concerts annually for nearly 500,000 live audiences worldwide. Their tours span Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. The Vienna Boys Choir is revered and beloved globally for its exceptional choral standards and extraordinary artistic expressiveness, earning the title "Angels of Song."

Today, the Vienna Boys Choir members, dressed in their iconic navy uniforms with innocent and adorable faces, sing like angels. For their upcoming tour in China, they have meticulously prepared a concert program that will guide the audience on an extraordinary musical journey. Their timeless, heavenly voices interpret the meaning of travel in the purest way.
