A visually driven dance drama inspired by the crested ibis, an endangered bird often associated with beauty and good fortune. Performed by Shanghai Dance Theatre, the piece explores the relationship between humans and nature through movement, imagery, and symbolism. It leans into environmental themes while keeping the storytelling poetic rather than literal.

Crested Ibises takes the image of the crested ibis—often referred to as the “bird of good fortune”—as its central motif. Once living alongside humans in agrarian times, the species gradually declined due to environmental changes brought on by modernization and urbanization.

The dance drama reflects this arc, moving from harmony to loss, and eventually toward rediscovery and protection. Inspired by the real-life rediscovery of a small population of wild crested ibises in Shaanxi in 1981, the work draws attention to the fragile balance between human development and the natural world.

Rather than telling a linear narrative, the production focuses on atmosphere and emotion. Through movement, staging, and visual design, it presents the ibis as elegant, sensitive, and symbolic—serving as a reminder of both what has been lost and what might still be preserved.

The production is jointly presented by Shanghai Dance Theatre and Shanghai International Dance Center Theater.

This is the kind of large-scale dance production that leans heavily on visual storytelling rather than dialogue, making it accessible even without prior context. It’s also a familiar title in Shanghai’s dance scene, often associated with themes of environmental awareness and aesthetic restraint. For audiences interested in contemporary Chinese dance works with a reflective tone, this sits firmly in that lane.
