Description

A Han-Tang dance theatre work inspired by ancient Chinese artifacts and classical texts, structured around seven thematic segments based on “The Seven Stimuli.” The production uses symbolic and imagistic dance language to reinterpret ritual, music, and cultural philosophy through movement.

About

This work draws inspiration from artifacts such as Warring States painted lacquer boxes and Han Dynasty pictorial bricks, using their ancient visual language as a starting point for movement creation.

It is structured following Mei Cheng’s classical fu “The Seven Stimuli,” divided into seven segments: Pure Sounds, Exquisite Delicacies, Chariot Procession, Luxuriant Growth, Hunting Expedition, Gazing upon the Waves, and Upholding Ritual.

Through symbolic and imagistic choreography, the production aims to revive the essence of ancient rites, music, and cultural spirit. It explores traditional ideas of ritual propriety (li), while also offering a contemporary reflection on classical themes, using dance as a way to express meaning and embody ritual form.

Event Structure

Prologue

Pure Sounds (Qing Yin)

Metal and stone instruments resonate with bells and drums, creating solemn, clear melodies that evoke stillness and meaning.

Exquisite Delicacies (Zhen Xiu)

A banquet scene with food, wine, and ritualized dining that emphasizes harmony and order.

Chariot Procession (Chu Cheng)

A dignified chariot journey across noble terrain, expressing movement with grace and reflection.

Luxuriant Growth (Fu Shu)

A serene gathering under flourishing nature, bringing together scholars in calm ritualized elegance.

Hunting Expedition (Tian Lie)

A dynamic scene of horseback hunting across open plains, marked by strength and discipline.

Gazing upon the Waves (Guan Tao)

A contemplative moment facing vast waves, reflecting emotional distance and inner resolve.

Upholding Ritual (Cheng Li)

A final ritual segment emphasizing cultivation, order, and cultural continuity.
