Dee Dee Bridgewater is widely recognized as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz, with a career spanning more than four decades across jazz, theater, radio, and cultural advocacy. For this performance, she collaborates with pianist and composer Helen Sung, whose work combines jazz improvisation with classical training and contemporary composition.

The concert focuses on vocal jazz performance and piano collaboration, showcasing the musical dialogue between Bridgewater’s expressive vocal style and Sung’s rhythmic and harmonic approach at the piano.

Dee Dee Bridgewater is a Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz vocalist with a career spanning over 40 years. She has won three Grammy Awards, including Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee.
She began her career performing with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and later collaborated with numerous jazz musicians throughout the 1970s. In addition to her recording career, she has appeared in productions including The Wiz, Lady Day, Carmen, and Cabaret. She also hosted NPR’s long-running jazz program JazzSet.

Helen Sung is a jazz pianist, composer, Guggenheim Fellow, and Steinway Artist. Originally from Houston, Texas, she studied classical music before transitioning into jazz while attending the University of Texas at Austin.
She was part of the inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and won the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with artists including Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Wynton Marsalis.
This concert brings together two generations of internationally recognized jazz artists in a relatively intimate theater setting. Dee Dee Bridgewater’s long-standing influence in vocal jazz, combined with Helen Sung’s contemporary piano work and compositional approach, offers audiences a chance to hear both classic and modern jazz perspectives in the same performance.
