Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days will be presented by Brazil’s Armazém Theatre Company as part of the 2026 Shanghai Jing’an Drama Festival. The minimalist absurdist play follows a woman buried in a mound who continues her daily routines while confronting the passage of time and the limits of existence. This production reinterprets Beckett’s classic through the company’s visual stage language and physical performance style.

Happy Days is a classic work by Samuel Beckett, one of the most influential playwrights of the 20th century and a recipient of the 1969 Nobel Prize in Literature. Written in 1961, the play is considered one of Beckett’s major mid-career works and an important piece in the canon of absurdist theatre.

The play unfolds in a stark and minimalist setting: a barren landscape, a mound of earth, and two characters. Winnie, the central figure, is buried in the mound with only her upper body visible. Each day she performs a series of ordinary rituals—brushing her teeth, applying lipstick, and speaking to herself—while her partner Willie remains mostly silent nearby.

Through this seemingly simple situation, Beckett examines how people maintain dignity, meaning, and hope even in the most extreme circumstances. Winnie’s persistence and optimism, despite gradually sinking further into the mound, create one of the most memorable images in absurdist theatre.

In this production, Armazém Theatre Company interprets Beckett’s text through visual imagery and physical expression, transforming the minimalist script into an immersive stage experience.
Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) was an Irish playwright, novelist, and poet widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern theatre. His works often explore fundamental questions of human existence through minimalist language and structure.

His play Waiting for Godot (1952) marked a turning point in modern drama and established Beckett as a central figure in the Theatre of the Absurd. Happy Days continues this exploration of existential themes, focusing on time, aging, and human resilience.
Armazém Theatre Company was founded in 1987 in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The company is led by director and co-founder Paul Mariels and actor Patricia Sellongk.
The troupe later moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1998, where its productions gained wider recognition. Known for visually striking performances, the company combines physical expression, sound, and theatrical imagery in its approach to stage work.
Armazém Theatre Company has received more than 100 awards in Brazil for its productions.

This production is presented as part of the 2026 Shanghai Jing’an Drama Festival and commemorates the 120th anniversary of Samuel Beckett’s birth. Audiences will see a new interpretation of one of the most important works of absurdist theatre, staged by an international company known for its visually driven performances.
