The trendy/touristy downtown. The star of the Puxi show. The northern part of Xuhui has those leafy plane-tree dominated blocks, luxury buildings, gorgeous lane houses and eleventy kazillion bars and restaurants. It's unlikely you're going to find a deal in this part of town, but if you do rent here — and you avoid the super high-end market — it's actually a bit cheaper than Jing'an. You'll feel like you're in the center of things, but some may feel like they're in an expat bubble. Not a lot of compounds here, but it's the lane-houses that you are looking for here.
