About the role
The China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) is the leading business network promoting trade and investment between the United Kingdom and China. Headquartered in London with extensive operations across China, CBBC acts as an independent voice for our members, providing the advocacy, analysis, and access they require to succeed in China. We were founded in 1954.
Reporting to our Director, Membership and Events, the Assistant Director, Membership, is primarily responsible for the servicing of CBBC’s membership in China. The role forms a critical part of CBBC’s membership team with a primary focus on ensuring a high standard of service through direct member engagement, events, and other support tailored to our network.
In addition to membership servicing, the role supports the recruitment of new members, requiring close collaboration with CBBC’s teams located across China and the UK.

Key Responsibilities
Membership Servicing (60%)
Retention & Account Management:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for members, ensuring high-quality, consistent account management and service delivery in China.
- Support the Director in servicing Strategic Partner Members (SPM) and Premium Members to enhance service satisfaction and ensure renewals.
- Develop and implement systematic engagement mechanisms to maintain regular, effective communication with members at both the China CEO level and working level.
- Proactively collect member feedback, needs, and expectations regarding events, government relations (GR), policy support, and other services, and translate insights into actionable improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with CBBC teams across China and the UK to align on retention strategies and deliver integrated member support.
Member Event Programme Coordination
- Coordinate CBBC’s member-focused events pipeline across the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, working closely with CBBC’s sector and regional teams.
- Ensure events are tailored to member needs, professionally delivered, and centrally aligned to strengthen member value.
- Manage end-to-end event coordination to maintain a robust, high-quality events calendar that supports retention and engagement.
New Member Recruitment (25%)
- Drive recruitment of British companies into CBBC membership with a primary focus on Shanghai and East China.
- Collaborate with our local teams to drive membership growth in Beijing, South China (including Hong Kong), and other key regions.
- Support local teams to develop and execute recruitment strategies and achieve assigned recruitment KPIs.
- Build and leverage a strong network to identify, engage, and convert prospective member companies.
Additional Support Responsibilities (15%)
- Manage a portfolio of partner stakeholders in East China.
- Support the administration of member renewals and onboarding.
- Support regular internal reporting on membership renewals, performance, and trends.
- Work with CBBC’s membership and events teams in the UK to deliver a seamless experience to our members across both markets.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or above; background in business development, membership management, corporate affairs, or client relationship management is preferred.
- Proven experience in membership retention/development, corporate account management, or business development within chambers of commerce, professional service firms, or international business environments (or comparable experience) is preferred.
- Experience managing multiple stakeholders and delivering results in a fast-paced, target-driven setting.

- Fluent in English – able to communicate professionally in English with internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency in Mandarin preferred.
