Description
The Metals Sales and Marketing function at Fortescue is responsible for developing and implementing Fortescue’s marketing strategy, coordinating and supporting regional sales offices, negotiating iron ore prices and commercial agreements, managing ongoing scheduling, marketing reporting, and administration, and conducting market analysis.
The industry analysis function within Metals marketing is responsible for reporting on underlying market conditions and the development of analysis that supports our strategy and business decisions.
We are seeking a Market Analyst, based in Shanghai, who will report to the Senior Manager, Industry and Market Analysis. The Market Analyst will be responsible for supporting the delivery of high-quality market intelligence, data analysis, and insights across the iron ore and emerging green commodities. The role plays a critical part in informing marketing and commercial strategy.
Key Accountability:
1. Market research on the steel and iron ore sectors in China
- Conduct detailed research on China steel and steel-making raw materials market dynamics.
- Review China’s policy and regulatory frameworks supporting low-carbon steel and energy adoption (e.g., carbon pricing, green steel certifications).
2. Collaboration with team members
- Work closely with sales and technical marketing team members to collect insights on market developments and implications for industry evolution.
- Provide data-driven support for discussions with external stakeholders, such as regulators, industry groups, and customers.
3. Customer and Competitor Insights
- Analyse customer and competitor trends in China for iron ore products, low-carbon steel, including sectors prioritising sustainable materials (e.g., automotive, construction, renewable energy).
- Analyse customer and competitor trends in China for green energy products.
4. Data Collection and Reporting
- Gather and organise data on production methods, feedstock sources, and costs associated with steel production.
- Prepare detailed and visually compelling reports, dashboards, and presentations on market trends, forecasts, and key findings related to low-carbon steel.
- Maintain required systems and databases to support near-term market analysis (third-party platforms and internal systems/dashboards).
- Support in translation of critical data sources and market intelligence.
5. Economic and Cost Analysis
- Analyse the cost structures of steel / decarbonised steel production methods and their implications for market competitiveness.
- Support the development of pricing models and forecasts for iron ore and green metals products.
- Respond to queries and provide insights to support strategic decision-making for internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy/Materials Science, Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, or Industrial Engineering), Economics, Environmental Science/Engineering, Business or Finance (with a focus on industrial markets or sustainability).
- Strong learning capability; an experimenter, a researcher, enthusiastic about developing insights and generating value.
- Strong knowledge of steel market dynamics and industry experience.
- Expert knowledge of MS Excel and PowerPoint / some experience in the use of Power BI.
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a consulting or corporate work environment, focused on steel or commodity markets.
- Ability to organise and manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, achieve goals, and work under pressure in a dynamic and complex environment.
- Strong analytical skills with close attention to detail and accuracy.
- Team player with solid communication skills.
- Language skills: Fluent Mandarin Chinese and strong business English with experience preparing a range of documents and reports for senior leadership.
