Shabby chic Shanghainese restaurant in a quaint old villa hidden in the back of an old nongtang. Inside, it's a clutter of antiques, vitrines housing all manner of chinoiserie, shelves groaning under the weight of Buddhist philosophy tomes. It has atmosphere and service in spades. The food (set meals from 400 to 800rmb per person) is good, but doesn't quite hit the mark for the price. Afternoon tea sets at 298rmb for two people are a more affordable option for those who want to enjoy Cheng Yuan's atmosphere.
