From the South African wine importers of the same name comes La Burg, the city’s only South African restaurant and bar. The interiors are done up like a huge hunting lodge, with a massive open communal dining space, bar, semi-open kitchen, full stage for DJs and bands, two banquet-style private rooms, and a wrap-around patio with outdoor seating that spreads around the entire venue. Although the menu is specifically South African, with several national classic dishes represented — Springbok Venison Tartar, Bobotie, Boerewors Roll, and even their rendition of Nando’s Chicken — anyone looking for pan-African flavors will find something to like. On Saturday night, the guest DJ comes in and the bar takes over with parties anchored around South African and West African sounds — afrobeat, kwaito, and amapiano. La Burg, with its singularity and authenticity in flavors and sounds, is a community point for Shanghai’s deep and active African expat community.
