Created in the garden of an old lane house on Julu Road in Shanghai, Julu Gin was born out of a desire for a good solid flavorful gin made from China’s vast array of botanicals without taking away from gin’s traditional flavor, juniper. In 2021, the dream became a reality, when fortuitously a space was secured on the beautiful Chongming Island, the ancestral home of our family, and the first gin distillery was established in Shanghai. Striving to create an authentically local product, Julu Gin’s visuals draw inspiration from traditional Jinshan folk art, while recipes take cues from Chinese culture and its longstanding tradition of incorporating spices and herbs into cuisine and medicine. Experimenting with different botanicals--- dark spices, bright citrus and delicate florals, Julu Gin’s two main varieties were born: the Julu Dry Gin and the Julu Silk Road Gin. Distilled in a custom-built copper still, both flavors are made in small batches. We proudly stand as the sole producers of a truly Shanghai-made gin in the market, currently available across China.
