There’s a new place on Jinxian Lu called Kebaba and they serve just one thing: “Berlin Doner Kebabs.”. Now, if you’re in-the-know, in Berlin, after a hard night out at the dance club culturally appropriating Black American techno music, nothing hits the spot like a nice, traditional “Berlin doner kebab.”. Just kidding! (Kinda.) We’ve had the pleasure of having actual Berlin doners in actual Berlin, though, and it was our understanding that a Berlin doner kebab is a Turkish doner kebab that is served to you in a Turkish restaurant at 4:57am when you’re mashed off your face. Thankfully, the internet proves us wrong. Originating in the 1970s from Turkish immigrants, the Berlin variation on a Turkish doner kebab has a few key differences: it’s usually chicken rather than beef or lamb, or beef-lamb; it’s served with thicker bread; the sauces can vary (ketchup-mayonnaise for the Germans and tzatziki for the Turks); and it’s served with fries, fast food style, rather than rice or salads. Okay. Fair enough. Kebaba is a Berlin kebab place then. There is one meat base available—chicken—served two ways in two sizes: “The Classic” (33rmb for a small, 43rmb for a large) and “The Berliner” (43rmb for a small, 53rmb for a large). The one definitely has thicker bread. They’ve both got the standard salad interiors, the option to upgrade to a set with fries and a drink, and you can choose your own sauces: White Sauce, Mayonnaise, Secret Sauce, Spicy Sauce, and Ketchup.  All very Berlin sauces, the internet informs us. We got one of each and downed them in like 5 minutes. They were good. Even if we hadn’t been to a DJ Hell set in like 10 years. The space itself is tiny—like four seats available—so plan to be standing on the street, downing your Berlin doner like a criminal with sauce running down your face. Jinxian Lu is a cool place, though. It offers all the best things about Shanghai: cool little, indy fashion boutiques; hole-in-the-wall coffee shops and cocktail places; people actively trying to end your life with their scooters; and hunched over, 9000-year-old dudes sitting in tiny chairs on the sidewalk staring into the abyss. Ambiance! Kebaba. Berlin Doner Kebabs. Pretty good. Now you know it’s there.
