Jōdo Space - located just above the West Bund (and One East) in Huangpu - has steadily become one of the finest vinyl shops in Shanghai since opening two summers back - stocking a wide array of underground music from all walks of life and corners of the globe. A killer collection that would intimidate even the most dedicated vinyl hunters out there, it's curated by some of the scene's most eclectic spin doctors, a ragtag team of DJs, producers, and promoters who can often be found behind their in-store decks playing to whoever's around. They put out weekly roundups of what's new in their collection on their WeChat account - everything from 70s city pop to 60s psychedelia - and even a solid catalogue of releases from domestic acts and labels within China. It veers toward more esoteric sounds - so don't go expecting to find a copy of Green Day's American Idiot (though I wouldn't count out Dookie). On top of being a treasure trove of sounds you may not have even known existed, it's simply a really cool space - tucked away in the back of an industrial park - making it a great afternoon hang. Grab a seat out front, sip on a coffee, or better yet, a cold beer; play with their trusty Golden Retriever mascot Cookie or get sucked into a game of kendama (cup-and-ball). It's a place one could easily kill a hour listening to some vintage Motown soul or obscure Japanese new wave.
