Sample is an experimental hybrid space on Yongfu Lu that resists being neatly categorized. Part vintage shop, part café, part casual food spot, it brings together 1990s Japanese streetwear, design objects, coffee, and evening barbecue under one deliberately ambiguous roof. The founders frame it as a “sampling” project—less about creating something new than reusing and recontextualizing what already exists—and that idea carries through the layout: worn walls, undefined corners, a mossy feature wall, and areas that feel more like corridors or waiting rooms than retail. By day it works as a place to browse clothes or sit quietly; at night, grills come out, drinks appear, and it turns into a loose, social hangout. It attracts people who are curious, unhurried, and not especially concerned with what kind of place it’s supposed to be.
