Laifood 99 is a private restaurant, hidden in a powder blue house on Fuxing Xi Lu. The food is expensive Shanghainese that tries for modern touches, a la Whampoa Club, and like a lot of things here, is well-intentioned but flawed in the execution. The old house has Art Deco touches and a lot of potential, but also peeling paint and mildewed walls, which the mediocre food doesn't make up for. It primarily serves as a clubhouse for the Taiwanese owner's rich friends and various government associates.
