Rui Fu Yuan has been a standby for home-style Shanghai cuisine for nearly two decades. Once upon a time, it held court on Jinxian Lu with other local legends like Chun, Lan Xin, and Hai Jin Zi. It has since moved on to bigger digs a few blocks away on Maoming Nan Lu. That doesn't seem to have any effect on what's coming out of the kitchen, though. Ningbo-inspired seafood dishes are the specialty here. Their xiao yu huntun tang, or yellow croaker wonton soup is to die for. As are their hai gua zi, tiny clams stir-fried with a simple, but classic, combination of ginger, scallions, and garlic, along with a few splashes of soy sauce and vinegar. Be sure to order a plate of their xiefen shengjian dumplings stuffed with pork and crab steamed and fried in a puffy leavened dough. This place is wildly popular with locals and it usually fills up before six. Plan on arriving at 5.30pm if you don't want to wait. Reservations, fortunately, are accepted.
