Shanghai's summer film season is back, and it's spread itself a bit further than usual. This year's GATE M MovieLand Film Festival runs across three venues: Gate M West Coast Dream Center, Gate M Al Plaza, and PRISMA Xinjia Centre. The setup is simple enough, no reservartion drama for most of it. Only the Gate M West Coast Dream Center requires advance reservation. Everything else is walk-in.
Gate M is still doing the most visually obvious thing: films by the river, skyline in the background, people check the sunset every five minutes. Al Plaza and Prisma Xinjia Center lean more into casual neighborhood screening energy: show up, find a spot, sit down wherever the crowd hasn't already claimed.
The only officially published full schedule so far is from Gate M Al Plaza, and it's a pretty solid mix across three themed weeks:Week 1 (July 2–6) July 2 — Surprise screening July 3 — 101 Dalmatians July 4 — Surprise screening July 5 — Surprise screening
Week 2 (July 7–12) July 7 — NobodyJuly 8 — I Am What I AmJuly 10 — Robot DreamsJuly 11 — Surprise screeningJuly 12 — Surprise screening
Week 3 (July 13–20) July 13 — Roman Holiday July 15 — Only Cloud KnowsJuly 16 — RebuildingJuly 17 — There's Still TomorrowJuly 18 — B for BusyJuly 19 — Her Story
Summer nights on the West Bund rarely go wrong anyway, whether you catch a screening or not, you end up by the river, with a drink, some food stall snack you didn't plan to buy, and the kind of breeze that makes everything feel slightly more cinematic than it actually is. Over the next three weeks, just pick a night and head down. Worst case, you miss a film. Best case, you get Shanghai doing what it does best in July.
