I agree with most of the above. Pretty crappy steak and burger but lower prices than most on the Bund! Liked the view but I guess I could go to a lot of places on the Bund for the view and pay just as much. I guess if I ordered the Chinese beef from the wet market from my housing area I would have a saved a couple hundred quai.
Make myself a nice drink, head up to my roof and cook a Chinese beef steak on the grill and I would get the same amount of ambience, a better view, better service, same quality of meat and pay a 1/4 of the price!!
A lot of people in other reviews have complained about the pretension surrounding this place, and I think that their assessments could have some validity despite the fact that my own experience was quite good. With such commanding views of both the Bund and Pudong, how could you not find yourself among a group of big headed fools at times, staff included? How could you not find yourself arguing with whatever languages (or gestures) available to obtain the best seat? How could you not be edgy when you realize the prices you are paying are obscene, even in Euros?
If you ask me, half of the price here has nothing to do with the food. It’s for the privilege of being able to pretend you are a Party boss, ruminating on the future of Shanghai’s most famous skyline. Should I knock down the TV tower, and put in a real rocketship? How about a bungee cord across the river? If you spend the whole time harping about not getting the absolute BEST food for the kind of money you are spending, then you are missing half the value of this place. (The Party boss would probably order all kinds of food, and eat none of it anyway.)
As for me, I found the food to be excellent. I ordered the maple glazed salmon with roasted asparagus and leek puff—savory to the last bite. The fact that it cost over 200RMB quickly vanished from my mind as I took in the skyline. It was a late lunch, so the restaurant was pretty sleepy and I had all the time in the world to gaze at the heart of China’s great cosmopolitan city. I decided to keep the TV tower.
Have only eaten from the bar menu. Great view on the terrace, good service, and delicious food. Both burger/chicken wing-type fare and more refined grilled fish/salads were excellent. One of the best chocolate cakes in Shanghai, very generously portioned, and their pear and red wine tart is both sophisticated and mouth-wateringly good.
Well another place one should avoid like the plague! Making a reservation with the door-bitch on the phone resulted in this woman telling me: You can only reserve a table between 6-8 pm. Not later because we are fully booked. So I choose 6 pm and then she tells me, I will keep your table till 6.05pm and if you are not there I will give it away! So I show up at 5.45 pm with 5 guests, then the staff is pushing the food down your throat and by 8.15 pm we are more or less finished and guess what: The place is half empty. So we order another espresso, and a second after diner drink, and guess what by 8.45 pm the place is still half empty. So If you like to have staff push your food down your throat, pay RMB 3000 for a mediocre meal and be treated by the door bitch as yesterday’s trash, this is the place for you! My advised, just sit on the terrace, order one of their cheapest drinks and stick it out on this one drink for about 5 hours. That will teach them what bad turn over on tables is!
Been here a few times and each time the service has completely let down what could be a great place to hang out. One time I was there for dinner, I had reserve and ask for a window seat, however when we were there they said its all reserved. looking around there was not many people dining. After speaking english as I lost my patience to try and speak Chinese, they moved me to a better seat. The last time I was there to meet with friends, the bartender that served me, did anything but that. He literally threw the receipt at me, easpecially when i ask for the complimentary peanuts, which ended up costing 20rmb. I don;t think I will be returning after that kind of attitude.
Just had dinner here. Very nice but what I think is sad is that I am so impressed by this place. Sad because this is really just an average restaurant back home but here in Shanghai it's great!!! I have come to the conclusion after over 1 year of eating in this city that your best bet really is Chinese. Goto an upscale place, stay away from the Shark's fin and Abalone, and you will spend way less (I mean for a burger and chips come-on!!) than ANY upscale Western restaurant and enjoy a much better meal.....
