The mindfulness program born at Google returns.
You can’t change the insanity of the world around you, but the Search Inside Yourself (SIY) workshop
aims to teach people the antidote: personal calm and concentration backed by neuroscience. The program was created as an in-house employee program at Google. It has since spun off as an independent institution with the likes of Arianna Huffington on its advisory board. It landied in China back in 2015, and has counted high-powered executives from companies like Procter&Gamble, 3M, Deloitte, Ford and Netflix among its attendees (hence the four figure price tag).
The course uses mindfulness (being present), self-awareness (understanding thoughts, emotions and habits), and self-management (managing impulses and reactions) to develop emotional intelligence and leadership skills, along with a bevy of other inspiring traits like building resilience in the face of challenges, managing stress, and increasing focus and attention when your phone is constantly going off in your pocket. Very useful (bzz) in the hyper-hectic (bzz) modern (bzz) Shanghai life (bzz).
There will be meditation, but the event is entry level, not a full plunge silent retreat. A more enjoyable and useful alternative to the annual mandatory company-bonding weekend.
The instructors are Brenda Petersen, a leadership coach and senior executive of a leading international school in Shanghai who has led SIY workshops for global firms such as Adidas, and Sabrina Shi, a seasoned corporate coach and holistic mindfulness teacher who has introduced mindfulness to firms such as Bosch, Disney, Milliken, Roche and others.
The upcoming session will be held on December 4 and 5 from 9am-5pm. Tickets are currently on sale on SmartTicket
. Early-bird tickets cost 7,000rmb before November 11, and 8,000rmb after. Prospective attendees can reserve seats with a non-refundable 800rmb deposit. It includes a 12-hour in-person training, followed by a 4-week-long virtual practice and capstone webinar.
