A screenshot made the rounds in various WeChat groups today quoting an exorbitant electricity bill and now everyone is talking about the cost of electricity. Long story short, the price of electricity hasn't changed lately. We called the hotline of the Shanghai electricity provider and they confirmed that there have been no price increases since October 15, 2021. The screenshot is fake.
There's a few common sense factors that might have contributed to your own higher electricity bill last month. First, with the current Covid wave, obviously people are staying at home more. Which means more electricity. Which leads to the second factor: Electricity prices per kilowatt go up the more electricity you use. The prices are staggered into a price system with three tiers, and if your electricity bill is much higher than usual, it's likely that you reached a higher tier.
Here are the current prices:
Tier 1: If you use 0 to 3120 kw/h per year, you pay 0.307rmb in the nighttime (10pm to 6am) )and 0.677rmb in the daytime.
Tier 2: 3121 - 4800 kw/h per year, you pay (0.337rmb in nighttime and 0.677 rmb in daytime.
Tier 3: From 4800 kw/h per year, you pay 0.488 in the nighttime and 0.977 in the daytime.
