NYU Shanghai Talk - 'Sinofuturism... A Conspiracy?'
In tandem with his 2015 album, Nothing, Kode9, Steve Goodman collaborated with simulation artist Lawrence Lek on The Nøtel, an A/V project revolving around a fictional, Chinese-owned, fully-automated luxury hotel chain. Staffed only by drones, the Nøtel has become devoid of any life apart from occasional traces of human presence marked by holograms. In their talk, Lek and Goodman will discuss various shared strands of their research, including Sinofuturism, AI and Fauxrientalism (the collision between a digital culture of copying/imitation with the exoticization of East Asian culture by the West) as it plays out in both Lek’s simulation art and Goodman’s work as a researcher, DJ, producer and founder of the record label, Hyperdub. For more on Lek and Goodman, visit their websites: Lawrence Lek, www.lawrencelek.com and Steve Goodman, www.hyperdub.net. Introduction and moderation of the Q&A by Anna Greenspan, Assistant Director of the IMA Program, Assistant Professor of Global Contemporary Media, NYU Shanghai. No entry fee.
