The Jazz Discovery Series workshops at Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai are hands-on sessions designed for beginners and families. Led by saxophonist Walter Blanding, participants explore the fundamentals of jazz, including improvisation, swing, and blues, through listening, discussion, and interactive exercises.

About the Workshop

The Jazz Discovery Series is a two-session workshop program aimed at helping participants understand and experience jazz music firsthand.

April 6: “What is Jazz?”

Participants learn the three core elements of jazz: the freedom of improvisation, the rhythm of swing, and the emotional nuance of blues melodies. Classic jazz excerpts are played for comparison with pop and classical music, and attendees can try basic improvisation through interactive exercises.

April 26: “Fun & Games with Jazz”

This session uses game-based learning to break down jazz rhythm and style. Activities include rhythm imitation, melody chains, and jazz adaptations, suitable for families and young learners to participate together and experience the playful side of jazz.

Walter Blanding

• Internationally acclaimed saxophonist with over 34 years of experience, performing globally.
• Member of Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for 25 years, performing with artists including Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, and Elton John.
• Collaborated with top orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and London Symphony Orchestra.
• Awards include contributions to a Pulitzer Prize-winning album and involvement in Grammy-winning projects.
• Currently Assistant Professor of Jazz Saxophone at Michigan State University and former Jazz Ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai.
