The Nanzuka Art Institute in Shanghai is hosting a major retrospective of renowned Japanese artist Sorayama Hajime, known for his provocative and futuristic depictions of the human body and machinery. "Light, Transparency, Reflection" showcases a selection of works spanning nearly half a century, including Sorayama's iconic Sexy Robot series, and his futuristic mechanical dinosaurs, unicorns, and humanoid robots. Visitors can experience the evolution of his style, from 1970s advertising illustrations to the highly influential pop culture creations that continue to shape the visual language of sci-fi.
This immersive exhibition also features cutting-edge sculptures and video installations, including the legendary Sorayama robot sculptures that have made an impact in art, fashion, and music. A highlight of the exhibit will be the towering 12-meter mechanical geisha sculpture, previously showcased at Dior, now set up as a public art piece at the Huamu Shiguangli project. With its exploration of the fusion between biology and technology, this is a must-see for fans of contemporary art and futuristic aesthetics. Exhibit is closed on Tuesdays.
