As the opening exhibition of 2025, this showcase marks the first large-scale overseas exhibition by Japan’s POLA Museum of Art and represents a significant endeavor by the Shanghai Museum to comprehensively trace the development of Impressionism and its lasting influence 150 years after its emergence.
Featuring nearly 70 masterpieces by over 30 legendary artists, the exhibition spans works from Impressionist and Post-Impressionist icons such as Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin to modern pioneers like Matisse and Picasso. It also presents creations by contemporary artists including Wolfgang Tillmans, Hiroshi Sugimoto, and Yayoi Kusama, bringing together a constellation of artistic brilliance to immerse audiences in a grand and vibrant artistic celebration.
Following the themes of light, shadow, and nature, the exhibition not only highlights Impressionism’s achievements in capturing fleeting moments of beauty but also explores its evolution and reinvention in Fauvism, Cubism, and contemporary art.
