The stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning Spirited Away brings Hayao Miyazaki’s enchanting tale to life on stage. The story follows Chihiro, a young girl who stumbles into a world of spirits, relying on her wits to navigate the strange realm, rescue her parents, and find her way back home.

Premiered in 2022 as part of Toho Theatre’s 90th anniversary program, the production is adapted and directed by John Caird, former Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Caird, known for his work on Les Misérables and productions such as Knights’ Tale and Daddy Long Legs, has crafted a theatrical experience that captures the essence of the beloved film. The characters appear to step right out of the animated world, brought to life in a visually stunning and immersive stage performance.

The production has received critical acclaim, earning the prestigious Kazuo Kikuta Grand Award at the 47th annual Kazuo Kikuta Theater Awards. It also made history at the 25th WhatsOnStage Awards in the UK, becoming the first Japanese-language production to win Best New Play.
