Description

Georgia’s acclaimed absurdist solo play Margaret is coming to Shanghai this December. Written by Lasha Bugadze and directed by Zurab Getsadze—one of Georgia’s most celebrated theatre figures—the show blurs the lines between man and machine, loneliness and connection. It’s a haunting yet humorous reflection on how technology reshapes intimacy, performed by Teimuraz Dzotsenidze in a stunning multimedia stage experience.

  • Playwright: Lasha Bugadze
  • Director: Zurab Getsadze
  • Producer: Jingyi Ren
  • Actor: Teimuraz Dzotsenidze

Georgia’s acclaimed absurdist solo play Margaret explores what it means to be alone in a world constantly connected. Written by Lasha Bugadze and directed by Zurab Getsadze, it tells the story of Rostom—a middle-aged man whose only companion is the voice of his car’s GPS. One day, that voice begins to sound human. It laughs at his jokes, comforts his sadness, and listens when no one else does. As he spends more nights talking to it, the line between reality and illusion starts to blur. What begins as a lonely man’s routine turns into a surreal and emotional journey of love, technology, and isolation.

The play uses a stripped-down car frame as the main set piece, symbolizing Rostom’s fragmented mind. Live projections of maps, signals, and close-up footage of the actor’s expressions are displayed on a transparent screen, blending theatre and cinema in real time. Every performance feels intimate and unique, as if the audience is witnessing Rostom’s inner thoughts unfold before them.

Margaret is performed by Georgian actor Teimuraz Dzotsenidze, known for his role in the Sino-Georgian Hamlet. Directed by Georgian theatre master Zurab Getsadze—recipient of the Order of Honor for Artistic Merit—the production captures the loneliness and longing of modern life with raw intensity.

Through this absurd yet touching story, Margaret invites the audience to reflect on one question: In a world full of connections, why do we still feel so alone?
