Synopsis

Act I:

A serene village basks in sunlight streaming through the trees. Giselle, a beautiful and innocent village girl who loves to dance, lives here with her mother. Hilarion, a local villager, secretly loves Giselle, but she is indifferent to him. Count Albert, disguised as a peasant, visits the village and wins Giselle’s heart.

Hilarion discovers Albert’s hidden noble identity when he sneaks into Albert’s rented village house and finds a silver sword. Soon, a group of noblemen arrive after a hunt, including Albert’s fiancée, Bathilde. Enraged, Hilarion exposes Albert’s deception to everyone. Shocked by the betrayal and the harsh realities of the world, Giselle goes mad and dies.

Act II:

At night, moonlight illuminates the cemetery with wooden crosses, where the ethereal Wilis—ghosts of young women betrayed in love—rise from their graves. Dressed in bridal gowns and flower crowns, they dance hauntingly, ensnaring Hilarion as punishment for his jealousy.

Albert, tormented by guilt and grief over Giselle’s death, visits her grave. The Wilis attempt to punish him too, but Giselle’s ghost appears to protect him. Her pure and selfless love saves Albert from their wrath. With the first rays of sunlight, the Wilis vanish, and Giselle’s spirit fades, leaving Albert with the memory of her love and his eternal regret.
