In a time when artificial intelligence increasingly generates, predicts, and acts on human behalf, a quiet question emerges: what remains distinctly human when experience itself can be simulated. The exhibition transforms XIME into a sensory environment where dining, sound, moving image, and interaction come together. It turns attention back to embodied perception, where sensation, memory, and emotion are deeply intertwined, and where the body still holds traces of temperature, texture, sound, and smell that shape how the world is understood. Rather than positioning humans against AI, the project explores how human subjectivity is formed through sensory experience, developed through a collaboration between artist and artificial intelligence. Here, AI acts as a translator of sensation, turning fleeting bodily experiences into audiovisual fragments and forming a “net of sensation” that reassembles ephemeral perceptions into works that can be seen, heard, and revisited. Unlike a traditional exhibition, Capturing a Butterfly unfolds within a sensory dining environment where visitors engage through eating, moving, listening, and sensing, where a dish may evoke memory, a sound may shift mood, and a gesture may reawaken sensation. The exhibition creates a pause within acceleration, returning attention to subtle, embodied moments that shape how we feel, remember, and exist. During the exhibition period, XIME and the artist will also host sensory experience workshops, with details to be announced via XIME’s official WeChat account and SmartShanghai.
