This stunning dance-poetry production brings one of China’s most famous paintings to life—literally. Only This Green transforms A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains into a flowing, immersive stage experience, blending classical aesthetics with powerful contemporary movement. It’s a rare chance to see traditional Chinese art reimagined at full theatrical scale in Shanghai.

If there were a dance that could reveal a thousand years of mountains and rivers, or a painting that could move gracefully before one’s eyes, it would be Only This Green. At the beginning of the new year, this acclaimed dance-poetry production returns to Shanghai, taking the stage at Bank of Communications Qiantan 31 Performing Arts Center to continue a cultural dialogue that spans a millennium.

For thousands of years, the rivers and mountains have existed without name or signature—only this one scroll endures. When A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains awakens on stage, green becomes one of the most striking visual languages of the East.

Since its memorable appearance at the Spring Festival Gala, the iconic “green waist” movement has left a lasting impression. This is not a gentle or delicate beauty, but a powerful expression that embodies the weight of mountains and the vast flow of rivers.

The production unfolds like a living painting. Guided by the “scroll unroller,” the audience moves through chapters such as “Searching for Stone,” “Tempering Ink,” and “Entering the Painting,” traveling between past and present. Beneath a shared moonlight, the passion of the young painter Wang Ximeng meets the gaze of modern viewers, creating a spiritual resonance that transcends centuries.

This is more than a performance—it is an invitation. An invitation to step away from everyday noise and enter a moving landscape painting, continuing the timeless bond between “green” and “the land.”

As the new year begins, audiences are invited to release accumulated fatigue and find quiet restoration through this performance. With its deep cultural roots and luminous traditional aesthetics, Only This Green stands as one of the most moving openings to the Year of the Horse.
