Description

An immersive contemporary art exhibition by internationally acclaimed conceptual artist Antoni Muntadas that reflects on the idea of “home” as both a physical and psychological space. Through glass installations, neon, text and multimedia works, Muntadas explores how cultural, political and economic forces shape our sense of belonging and identity. The show encourages visitors to rethink boundaries between private and public realms in a globally shifting world.

Homecrossing: Glass Projects

Organized as part of the Shanghai Museum of Glass’s ongoing creative ‘Annealing’ program, this exhibition by Antoni Muntadas brings together a series of new and historical works that look at the complex notion of “home”. Muntadas, a pioneer of conceptual and media art since the 1970s, uses glass as both material and metaphor — transparent yet separating — to probe the tensions between private life and wider societal narratives. The show includes recent pieces created during the artist’s 2024 residency in Shanghai alongside older installations that together explore themes of movement, communication, political power, and cultural translation. Conceptually layered and visually diverse, *Homecrossing* invites visitors to consider how shifts in geography, identity and information flows continuously redefine what home means in the contemporary world.

Artistic Themes and Presentation

Works in the exhibition range from neon text and colored glass structures to multimedia installations incorporating sound and video. Glass’s dual nature of visibility and division becomes a central device to express the fragile boundaries of personal and collective space. The show’s title evokes the crossing of thresholds — between inside and outside, local and global, familiarity and estrangement — mirrored in the exhibition’s design and sequencing. Curated by Su Wei with art direction by Lise Li, the installation blends conceptual rigor with sensory engagement.
