Korean contemporary artist Soonik Kwon’s practice unfolds as a sustained inquiry into time, material, and perception, brought together in this presentation through his key series “Mu-a (No Self)” and “Gap-Jeok-Yeon (Accumulation and Research)” across painting and installation. Centered on graphite as a primary medium, Kwon develops a distinctive visual language where repeated layering and rubbing transform the surface into a field of subtle luminosity, shifting with light and viewpoint rather than simply expressing darkness. Drawing from Korean ceramic traditions, East Asian notions of “in-betweenness,” and personal memories of industrial landscapes, his work reflects on the present as a fragile interval between past and future. In “Gap-Jeok-Yeon,” accumulated layers of pigment and earth are interrupted by graphite-filled gaps that act as both spatial voids and temporal thresholds, while the dot-based “Mu-a” series extends this logic into rhythmic repetition, where gesture becomes a meditative process of release from the self. Together, these works construct an immersive environment in which material, light, and time continuously intersect, inviting viewers into a quiet space of perception and contemplation.
