Thirty years after Live at the Liquid Room rewired how people think about DJing, Jeff Mills is finally making his mainland China debut this May, brought in by SYSTEM for two shows in Shanghai and Beijing. The Detroit techno pioneer—also known as “The Wizard” and a co-founder of Underground Resistance—built a reputation on near-impossible vinyl control, pushing speed, precision, and physicality to the limit, as captured in his 1995 Tokyo set at Liquid Room. That recording still circulates as a kind of benchmark: not just for techno, but for what a DJ can do live. Expect something less like a throwback and more like a compression of past, present, and future—fast, stripped-back, and intensely focused, with flashes of the different “versions” of Mills (DJ, producer, sci-fi composer) bleeding into each other.
