Marking the 130th anniversary of Liu Haisu’s birth, this exhibition at Liu Haisu Art Museum looks at the parallel careers of two key figures in the development of modern art education in China: Liu Haisu and Yan Wenliang. Often mentioned alongside Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian as pioneers of modern Chinese art education, the two founded influential art schools in Shanghai and Suzhou and helped introduce Western academic training while rethinking how art should be taught in a rapidly changing society. Bringing together more than 100 artworks and archival materials, the show traces their artistic practices, teaching philosophies, and the institutions they built — offering a snapshot of how early 20th-century artists navigated the meeting of Chinese tradition and Western modernity.
