Drawing on 119 pieces from the Guangdong Museum, this exhibition looks at Qing-dynasty export art as a byproduct of global trade rather than court culture. The selection ranges from Canton embroidery and enamelware to export paintings, silverware, fans, and intricately made card cases, many produced in Guangzhou for European and American clients in the 18th and 19th centuries. Western coats of arms, mythological scenes, and perspective techniques sit alongside traditional Chinese craftsmanship, reflecting a period when styles were negotiated rather than fixed. A small group of Bund-related images also links Guangzhou’s trading past to Shanghai’s early port history, grounding the show in a broader maritime context.
