A one-stop-only concert bringing together four familiar faces from German-language musical theatre, all of whom have left strong impressions on Shanghai stages. Shadow & Glanz revisits iconic moments from landmark German and Austrian musicals, performed by artists closely tied to Shanghai Culture Square’s musical theatre history.

Schattenglanz - German Musical Stars in Concert brings together four leading performers from the German-language musical theatre scene, all of whom have previously appeared on the stage of Shanghai Culture Square. The title reflects the dramatic contrast often found in German musicals, where darkness and brilliance coexist through music.

Jan Ammann is remembered by Shanghai audiences for his emotionally charged portrayal of King Ludwig II in Ludwig II: The King Is Back, capturing both the romantic idealism and inner struggle of the historical figure. In the same production, Martin Markert took on the dual roles of the Shadow Man and Otto, using subtle performance shifts to explore different dimensions of human nature. Annemieke van Dam demonstrated her wide-ranging abilities by moving between the freedom-seeking Empress in Elisabeth and the enigmatic housekeeper in Rebecca. Antonia Kalinowski made a strong impression in Rebecca with her expressive voice, marking a memorable international stage appearance.

Reuniting on stage, the four performers present selected highlights from milestone works in German and Austrian musical theatre. Through these excerpts, the concert traces the artistic development of the genre while reconnecting with performances that are closely linked to Shanghai Culture Square’s stage history.
