Spanning more than three decades of artistic practice, this presentation brings together over fifty works by Shanghai-born artist Shen Chen, tracing his evolution from ink-based painting to acrylic and mixed-media abstraction across different cultural contexts between China and the United States. Moving from early influences in traditional Chinese ink painting to later encounters with Western modernism and Minimalist practices, his “platform painting” method gradually takes shape through disciplined, repetitive vertical brushwork that accumulates into layered fields of grey. What first appears as atmospheric softness is in fact constructed through precise control and repetition, where brushstrokes function simultaneously as gesture, measurement, and breath, generating a spatial condition often described as “fog-like.” Across early experiments, transitional works, and mature large-scale compositions, the practice continually negotiates between structure and ambiguity, ultimately opening up an expanded field of abstraction where geometry and perception, order and dissolution, coexist within a single visual language.
