About The Ballet

Composed in 1890 for the Imperial Theatre in St. Petersburg, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s tale, adapted by Alexandre Dumas. Premiered in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre, it tells the story of Clara, who receives a nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. When it comes to life to battle the Rat King, Clara journeys with the Nutcracker Prince to the magical Candy Kingdom, experiencing wonder, dance, and celebration.

The Nutcracker is one of Tchaikovsky’s three iconic ballets—alongside Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty—and is a staple of holiday performances worldwide, celebrated for its enduring cultural impact.
