Spanish artist Julio Anaya makes his Shanghai debut with a presentation of more than 50 works that sit somewhere between faithful reconstruction and quiet disruption. Best known for reworking iconic images from art history onto discarded materials like cardboard, broken plasterboard, and old skateboards, Anaya uses a highly controlled technique to recreate the brushwork, color, and emotional weight of figures such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Caravaggio, and Warhol, while leaving the rough textures and flaws of the materials fully visible. The contrast between refined imagery and fragile supports invites a slower look at questions of value, authorship, and what we consider “original.” Alongside well-known references, the exhibition also includes new works made during the artist’s Shanghai residency, extending this dialogue into a local and contemporary context.
