[In Focus]: Working Essentially During the Shanghai Lockdown

Workers and volunteers keeping the wheels turning at the front lines

A picture-driven look at what's new, cool, special and weird about Shanghai. This is the view from the ground, through the lens of our photographers.
  • SmSh: Presented for your perusal, a series of photographs from Shanghai-based photographer Graeme Kennedy. For this set, Kennedy trained his lens on the people working through the Shanghai lockdown, delivering food, collecting trash, conducting Covid tests, and going about the daily business of Shanghai vs. Omicron 2022.

    Photographer’s notes:

“Without being able to explore very far during lockdown, I was still able to capture a tiny sliver of the absolutely mammoth task Shanghai is undertaking to run this lockdown. At the end of the day, our food, and Covid tests are driven, distributed, and then collected as waste by an army of volunteers and workers.

Although stretched thin, they were a resilient reminder that even when Shanghai is in hibernation, she's still a city that never sleeps.”
