Big shiny museum inside a pretty park where you can sit on the grass, right next to Yan'an Xi Lu over by Yuyintang. A good option if you’re after a bit of art and sunshine somewhere reasonably central. Some background: before donating his own paintings and sizeable art collection to the city in the early 90s, the late Liu Haisu was already synonymous with Shanghai. Born in 1896 in nearby Changzhou, he was a co-founder of Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting and one of the first art educators to introduce nude models into life drawing classrooms in China. Above all, he helped open up opportunities for studying art beyond society’s elite. With that in mind, in 1995 - one year after his death - Liu Haisu was recognized by the city by way of a museum, then located way out in Hongqiao. Haisu deserved a bigger space and a more central location, and this second edition opened in March 2016. When it's finished, the museum will have six galleries, a café, a lecture hall, and lots more. The gift shop is already open: nice notebooks, if that’s your thing.
