Shanghai American School (SAS), established in 1912, is the oldest international school in China and a leader in education across Asia. Serving almost 3,000 students from Pre-K to Grade 12 across two campuses in Shanghai, SAS fosters a diverse and inclusive community representing more than 40 nationalities. As a non-profit school, SAS reinvests all its resources into enhancing facilities, programs, and teaching to ensure students receive a world-class education.
At SAS, learning goes far beyond academics. The school emphasizes critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and global citizenship, equipping students with the skills to thrive in an ever-changing world. Students can choose from Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs to shape their academic paths based on their strengths and aspirations. To guide students in their journey after high school, SAS provides nine dedicated college counselors who work closely with families to navigate the university application process.
Beyond the classroom, SAS offers over 140 student-led clubs, a robust athletics program with 13 different sports, and diverse extracurricular activities, from performing arts to STEM initiatives. With a vibrant community and a mission to develop ethical global citizens, SAS inspires students to pursue their passions and make meaningful contributions to the world.

SAS follows an American Core Curriculum, which is developed and revised regularly by faculty groups based on best practices and current research in education. They offer over 45 courses in AP and IB programs.

Students participate in over 150 clubs, sports, and other activities including National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society, International Thespian Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Model United Nations, Poetry Club, Architectural Design Club, Community Service, Quiz Bowl, National History Bee and Bowl, Amnesty International, Roots and Shoots, Habitat for Humanity, Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), Documentary Film Making, cooking, Tabletop Gaming Society, Mu Alpha Theta Club, Korean Culture Appreciation Club (KCAC), Robotics Club, Fencing Club, Engineering Club, and Rotary International's Interact Club. SAS is a founding member of Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC), which comprises some of the pre-eminent international schools in Asia. Through APAC, SAS students participate in badminton, baseball, basketball, cross country, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, volleyball, band, choir, dance, forensics, orchestra, and theater. The school also co-founded the China Cup and Tri-Cities competitions. SAS middle school students participate in the China International Schools Sports Association (CISSA) League.

Transportation to and from campus is provided for a fee; after-school activities buses are free of charge.
