Underground club Heim floats out of the basement and into the open air for a free day party (mini festival?) called Heimliday this Saturday and Sunday on the corner of Changle Lu and Shaanxi Nan Lu. They've curated all kinds of family- and pet-friendly activities and events: plants and arts workshops, a sculpt-your-own-miniature-island workshop (very much here for it), ping pong, "restorative cocktails" and shochu, a small market, and more, plus music all day by 11 DJs and live performers.

They call it "a sanctuary for rejuvenation designed specifically for the daytime hours." Heim – which often deals in bouncier and more playful shades of house, techno, and rave – feels like a welcoming club that's actively trying to build community, and Heimliday feels like a natural extension of that. The name Heim itself comes from the German word for "sanatorium" and "home".

The first edition of Heimliday back in January was a good time. I arrived at the corner solo, and a huge inflatable wavy guy (like the ones at car dealerships) motioned for me to enter. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, a friendly clown blew a whistle at me, beckoned with his palm for me to come over, and then with his magic wand he encased my whole body in a giant bubble, which then floated away and over a greyhound. Usually, clowns scare me, but not this one. Then I hung out by a heat lamp and listened to a girl named Coil Sprite play flute over her beats. The whole vibe felt misty and beautiful – like moss in the morning. It did feel rejuvenating. Recommend. Plus, it's always nice to see club friends during the day!

This daytime affair all goes down at Green Station, the development on Changle Lu that housed the original Heim Club (not to be confused with Heim's current location on Nanyang Lu!).

Note: Some of the workshops have fees, and you'll need to register via Heim's account (there's a QR code in the Heimliday post in Heim's WeChat: heimshanghai): the 60-minute plant workshop happens at 3.30pm both days and is 88rmb, the 90-minute island-making workshop happens at 3.30pm on Saturday only and is also 88rmb.
