At X-SPACE Shanghai, photographer Wu Shenjie's Visible Folds takes portrait photography beyond the frame, combining giant images with sensory installations you can approach, touch and interact with.
Shot entirely on FUJIFILM GFX medium-format cameras and printed on a massive scale, the portraits reveal details we usually overlook: skin texture, individual hairs, subtle shifts in light and emotions hidden beneath an expression. Get close and a face becomes a landscape of tiny details; step back and it becomes whole again.
But this isn't just about looking at photographs. The installations bring these two-dimensional portraits into physical space through touch, sound and movement. Instead of simply standing in front of the work, you're invited to step inside it and become part of the experience.
Photography lets you see. Installation lets you participate. Somewhere in between are the Visible Folds.
