Big weekend for reading and clubbing incoming. System, the former club that throws parties around town from time to time, has two events lined up this weekend.
On Saturday night, they've got this summer's final pop-up at the dystopian, sci-fi-looking e-sports arena inside the Shanghai Hotel from 10pm–2am. The lineup's solid too, including 4D, Velvet Robot, and the ever-energetic Cocoonics.
But the one that really caught my eye is the 24-hour reading session they're hosting at Keep It Quiet from 3pm Saturday until 3pm Sunday. The idea is simple: they're passing around a mystery book (bilingual) and inviting people to take turns reading it aloud over the course of a full day. As they put it, "We invite anyone who wishes to join to arrive at any moment, take the book, continue reading, sign their name on its pages, and pass it to the next person."
This sounds intriguing for a few reasons. First, reading is lit. Second, Keep It Quiet is one of the coolest bars anywhere. They just reopened after a multi-year pause, now occupying a larger room than the original. Everything about the place feels magical: the walk through the courtyard, the trees, the dolphin fountain, the couches, the vintage tobacco company memorabilia, the villa's diplomatic history, and so many other details.
The drinks are strong - no fufu drinks here - and the bar snacks are crispy dried huangyu. A recent visit a few weeks ago felt like an episode of Dawson's Creek starring time-traveling international school graduates, guest-directed by David Lynch, and featuring one of the best pianists I've ever seen, casually throwing down on a Thursday while passing through town.
So yeah: 24 hours of reading at Keep It Quiet from Saturday afternoon. Mystery novel. Drop in whenever. Maybe a good one to meet other people who enjoy reading books. And in the middle of all that, System's throwing a party nearby from 10pm-2am in that cybernetic e-sports arena at 505 Wulumuqi Bei Lu, near Yan'an Lu.
