Purcell and Handel shared the Restoration theater’s fascination with classical history and Elizabethan poets. Such a fascination endures to the present day, and to finish the year-long Shakespeare 400 celebrations, Shanghai Grand Theater invites the renowned baroque ensemble The English Concert to present a rare program featuring music inspired by The Bard. In the guise of an Elizabethan masque, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
