By Mar 21, 2019 Music
Bunch of rock, rockish and rock-adjacent music coming to Shanghai at the end of March. Dark psychotic visual kei from HYDE, Chinese rock opera Liao Zhai Rocks! (with subtitles), and Omnium Gatherum, a six-piece melodic death metal band from Finland. Something for every flavor of rock fan. With ticketing links!

Japanese rock star Hideto Takarai, known exclusively by his stage name HYDE, first gained prominence in 1991 as the lead singer for L'Arc-en-Ciel, and for his prolific output as a solo artist. Keeping tight to the genres of hard and alt rock with a dash of theatricality-obsessed visual kei, he's released 4 solo albums and 8 singles in his time, and provided the title song to the third season of "Attack on Titan." He's fresh off the release of "Zipang," featuring Yoshiki on piano. Unlike some of his quieter and unplugged performances, HYDE is back with a full-on hard rock sound, kicking off the Asia stretch of his world tour in China, with a stop in Shanghai.

Omnium Gatherum

A six-piece melodic death metal band from Finland founded in 1996, Omnium Gatherum are one of the best bands on the scene for their soaring, furious and symphonic sound. Markus Vanhala, their lead guitarist, has been with the band from the beginning, and their fifth studio album "New World Shadows," released in 2011, is hailed as one of the best to come out of Finland. Since then, they've continued from strength to strength. They released their eighth album "Burning Cold" in 2018. They're on a two-city China Tour, coming to Shanghai's Mao Livehouse.

The Pearl continues its regular rock tribute nights. March 23 is 90's Alternative Night, later on in April there's new dates for their Queen Tribute Concert, and even later there's a Prince Tribute Night.

Not rock but certainly heavy enough to give a similar rush, Oakland post-punk outfit The Soft Moon is on at Modern Sky Lab on March 28.
