We are moving towards a digital world. As of September 1, you are now able to store your Chinese driver’s license on your phone and show that to Shanghai traffic police instead of the physical copy. Wow. In order to do it, you download the approved apps Suishenban (随申办) or Shanghai Jiaojing (上海交警), register with your real name and Chinese ID Number (doesn’t work yet for passports) and authenticate the process. If you get stopped, you open the app and click “I want to show my license". Admittedly, this is not a revolution, as most people don’t have cars, but this move begs the question: now that your phone is your wallet, your metro card, your driver’s license and more, how long until we digitize our passports and Chinese ID cards?
